You may wake up every morning and say, without hesitation, “I am the same person I was yesterday.” In any useful sense, that is true. But physically, it is not exact. To remain close enough to the same person you were the day before, you must constantly change. You must breathe. You must drink water. You must eat. You must sleep. You must remove waste. Cells repair, proteins turn over, chemicals shift, memories update, injuries heal or fail to heal, and the body continually exchanges matter and energy with the world around it.
A human being persists by changing.
That should bother us a little. Not because identity is fake, and not because ordinary language is wrong. It works perfectly well to say that a person remains the same person. Law, memory, friendship, responsibility, and love all depend on that continuity. But the continuity is not exact sameness.
It is approximation under constraint.
A person is not the same because nothing changes. A person is the same because enough of the relevant structure remains coherent across change. The body maintained its organization. Your memory remained sufficiently coherent. The nervous system preserved enough pattern. The story continued without breaking beyond recognition. That is identity in the physical world.
Not perfect equality.
Persistence. Maintenance. Coherence across transformation.
The Ship of Theseus thought experiment makes the point clearly. Imagine a ship that leaves port and sails around the world. During the voyage, one board rots and is replaced. Then another. Then another. By the time the ship returns, every board has been replaced.
Is it the same ship?
The useful answer may be yes. It carried the same name. It followed the same path. It was repaired continuously. No single moment marked an obvious death of the old ship and birth of a new one.
But physically, every replacement mattered.
Every board introduced a boundary, a repair, a mismatch, a history. The ship’s identity was not preserved because its material stayed fixed. It was preserved because the structure remained organized through a continuous process of maintenance. The ship stayed “the same ship” only because its transformation never exceeded the tolerance of the identity we were using.
And that is the key.
Identity depends on tolerance. At ordinary scales, this is obvious and harmless. We do not need perfect microscopic sameness to recognize a person, a ship, a tree, a river, a planet, or a galaxy. We need stable enough continuity for the purpose at hand. But physics often speaks as though identity were cleaner than that. A particle remains the same particle. A system remains the same system. A state evolves into another state. A region of spacetime can be followed, shrunk, extended, divided, recombined, or reconstructed.
Most of the time, this works.
But “works” does not mean exact.
Mathematics can say A = A because mathematical symbols do not age, interact, decay, breathe, fracture, dissolve, remember, or scar. But physical systems do. They exist through time, entropy, finite resolution, and contact with the rest of the universe.
So the question is not whether approximate identity is useful. It is.
The question is whether identity should be treated as primitive.
Axiom Science begins from the opposite suspicion: identity should not be given automatically. It has to be earned and maintained. A thing remains one thing only while the structure required to support that identity continues to hold.
That means physical identity is better understood as a stability class than an absolute fact.
A thing is “the same” when it remains within the tolerances that define the identity being used. Change the tolerance, and the answer may change. A person may be the same person legally, socially, biologically, and emotionally, while being physically different in countless microscopic ways. A ship may be the same ship historically and functionally, while not being materially identical to the ship that departed.
This is not a contradiction. It is the difference between exact identity and operational identity. That distinction may matter most where physics is pushed hardest. Near the Planck scale, at singular limits, in quantum measurement, in cosmological reconstruction, and anywhere continuity is extended toward zero or infinity, the assumption that something remains “the same thing” may no longer be harmless.
Before asking how a thing evolves, we may need to ask whether it is admissible to treat it as one thing in the first place.
Before assuming an identity persists, we may need to ask what supports that persistence.
Before treating two descriptions as referring to the same physical system, we may need to ask what was lost, altered, averaged, or ignored in making that identification.
Identity is not assumed; it must be maintained.
And once that is taken seriously, sameness becomes less like a timeless fact and more like a physical achievement.
